I have a client who agreed with me a while ago on subtitles translation services, I did one project and he asked me to also do the time coding, no template was provided. I charged him USD 4.5 per min then.

Now, I accepted a new project of 10 movies, but he also wants me to print the subtitles on the video, what is the standard rate for full subtitle creation, translation, and printing?

Most importantly, what is the best software for that and what is the best subtitle editing software?

I'm not a subtitler.

Many video players allow you to show multiple subtitles. This often involves setting the position of the subtitles. I sometimes do this with VLC Player, but [url= [url removed] ]there are others/url] (not all open source). This would be useful for viewing multiple subtitles, but obviously you can't review them and see the results of your edits in real time.

For text-based subtitles (.srt, .vtt, etc.), you can try Gaupol.

Compatible with Windows and GNU/Linux, released under the GPL.

For Windows, click the "Release details and other downloads" link. Latest .exe I can see is 1.3.1 (scroll down the page).

You can open a source subtitle fie, then open or add a translation subtitle file as well (I'll assume they have the same number of lines and timing). Gaupol also supports video files.

If there's a need, there has to be someone willing to fulfill that need, so there's probably some subtitling tool where you can review subtitles in a source v. target fashion (cf. supra). However, subtitling does not consist in just taking the source lines and translating them into your target language. It involves compliance with the standard of subtitling in said target language and these often entails tweaking with timecodes in such a manner that you'll probably split the lines differently. In other words, it's not a "there are 400 lines in this 24min English subbed video, so there has to be 400 lines in every single other language in the entire universe". It's a very common misconception regarding the subtitling process, so please keep that in mind when you review subtitles, I've seen many agencies jump into the "let's put all subtitles into a big TM with a pinch of AI and ML to reduce cost" wagon and literally smash their IPs into the ground with that belief.

I agree with Michel's comments. In my post, I was only answering the OP's question.

Still, for reviewing existing translations, it might be interesting to compare the subtitles and their translation side by side (in Gaupol, etc.), while making any edits or timing/line adjustments in Aegisub and Subtitle Edit (to cite the two other open source programs the OP mentionned) or any other subtitling program.

Your source material for subtitling is supposed to be the video/audio file. Transcripts, whether verbatim or timed ones, are supposed to be used as reference material to clear ambiguities up (poor pronunciation, overlapping lines, heavy background noise, etc.), they should never be used as source material, simply because they may also contain typos (worse if your client relied on some algorithm to do the whole file).

Now, directly translating timed subs from an SRT file implies that you'll tweak the translation to match standard compliance in line-splitting (it can differ greatly from source language) and adjust the timecodes one by one to ensure easy reading for your audience. This tweaking will in turn probably create overlapping issues and you may end up wasting more time in the process than you would have if you had simply started from scratch.

Merging all lines of the transcript into a single file to properly translate them is the absolute best way to ensure non-compliance to the very basic CPL rule, forcing you to not only split the lines from scratch but also to cut, rephrase and alter your oh-so-perfect translation to forcefully fit in your brand new timespan, Cinderella-style. Of course this translation will also merge all overlapping lines along with phrases purposefully split ("Are you not going to drink your tea? It's my special tea. My special tea. My specialty"), hiding important information that would be very obvious even from reading the non-merged transcript without the video.

If you really don't have the choice (you already agreed to do the project or you're using one of those online platforms stealing your work with your consent), try the first solution. Otherwise, do the real job. Now, that's just my take on this.

I have been asked for my average annual word count for subtitling. I do subtitling work quite often but haven't the foggiest idea how I am supposed to calculate this, or rather if even such a calculation is worth making?

Well, this is a rather odd request because nobody really knows how many words one translates per year.

The only halfway accurate annual word count might result from your daily output x the number of days you actually do subtitle translations. This excludes of course any days on which you work on other translations, are on vacation, or sick, or have a family event you must or want to attend. But then you must have confirmed orders for subtitle translation projects for twelve months.

Frankly, I really can't see how anybody could predict how many words he or she translates in a month, let alone in a year, even if it's just an average estimate.

But let's see what our colleagues have to say.

Yearly income on your tax documents divided by your average per word price = gross estimate of your yearly weighed word count @ 1:1 for translation and around 1:3 for editing.

So if you earned, say $60K and you charge $0.10 per word, you worked on 600,000 weighed words in a year. If you do about half and half translation and editing, you could assume that you translated around 300,000 words a year and edited around 900,000 words.

I think it is just a way of asking; how many days you can or willing to do the subtitling job.
As you said" I do subtitling work quite often" you might have made very excellent subtitling project, I presume.
I also think if I am your client of subtitling project, I would ask you like that.
I mean it is totally up to you.

If QuickTime doesn't work for you, VLC will open just about any kind of movie.

This is so annoying and I just found out it has no solution but using older version Mac OSX. Instead of Mojave, I use Yosemite in other computer.

So annoying.

I am a Netflix subtitle translator and I have been working for 2 different vendors for more than a year. The only difference in this case is the rate you get per minute, as you stated :)
