I agree, it seems too much... Anyway, before refusing their offer, I'll try to negotiate for a shorter test, because they are proposing a long term cooperation.

As to Wincaps, well, it was interesting reading your opinions, because they also asked me if I can use it.
Actually, at the moment I only work with Aegisub and Subtitle Workshop, but I'm seriously thinking to buy a professional one and I'm looking more at Eztitles.

If you have a .txt file, the easiest way how to convert it to .srt is to change the file extension. Easy. In other cases, I usually use a subtitling software, e.g. Subtitle Workshop to open a file and save it in a required format (.srt or .sub). Hope this helps.

So, I asked a top-level expert at the University of Roehampton, and he said that

Sfera was recently bought by Deluxe, making it one of the largest subtitling companies of the world (probably TOP 2 with SDI), although the translator pools of Sfera and Deluxe have not been merged yet.
Sferastudio is their online translation platform that Netflix used (or maybe still uses) for their own translators. Sfera is also one of the vendors translating for Netflix.
Whoever contacted you - either Sfera directly or not - will surely provide you with access details, either for testing or work.

I am interested in subtitling as a freelancer, but I was wondering what programs you recommend for creating subtitles.

I work on a Mac, and I'd be willing to pay for a program if it's proven to be better than the free programs.

I'd love everyone's input!

Hi soohyunnee,

Four ways:

1. Through the contacts you obtain during your MA course in AVT;
2. Through the contacts you obtain while networking in AVT associations/unions;
3. Through direct clients;
4. Through subtitling agencies.

If the first two are not an option in your case, I recommend first getting a solid theoretical base in AVT and then applying to either Amara or Sfera to gain practical knowledge. Yes, their rates are beyond poor, but you need experience before you can move to greener pastures. Then you can try your luck with more reputable companies like VSI, BTI, Nordisk Undertext etc. or maybe even build your own business and attract direct clients.

I passed the test like 2 months ago and I still have not received any e-mails from Hermes. I translated from English into Russian and passed with a score of 86%.
Did any of you receive any job? If yes, then how did they contact you and what software do you use to make subs? Just wondering.

Hi soohyunnee!

Well, there are many programs out there: EZTitles seems really popular and I can personally recommend it for being very comprehensive while still being quite easy to use. It's not cheap, but you get alot for the money. Their support staff is really helpful too.

Another program, the one I use the most, is Titlevision. The version I have is an older program called TV2003 that I find somewhat easier to use than EZTitles, but it does not have as many features as EZTitles. The same company that made Titlevision is now selling another program called Submachine, but I haven't had the time to check it out properly. It's probably worth a look though.

As for free programs, there is a really nice one called SubtitleEdit. I don't use it for the subtitling itself (even though you could), but I find it very useful when doing other stuff like converting between different subtitle-formats and editing time-code, batch processing files etc.

The tool I have used the most is Subtitle Edit.

The tool that I find the best for serious work is WinCaps.

A good alternative that is fairly new and still needs some improvement is Oona’s Toolkit.

I have also used Aegisub, but it is not longer actively developed.

Actually, I've encountered the same issue when submitting my application to interpreters pool a while ago (in case with my subtitlers pool application, I had help from site staff from the start). I submitted a support ticket, but the source of the problem wasn't found in my case. The issue was resolved in a different way, great thanks to Yana, but apparently the issue itself was not something weird.

Yeah, as jbjb mentioned guidelines are paramount when subtitling for a client. Even more so if you are working on a Netflix project as they are really strict about following their guidelines. If you ignore them your work will most likely be rejected. You really do have to be able to simplify your translation to conform to their 42 character limit.
